There is strong association of Anxiety Disorders with Alcohol and Substance abuse. In some studies reviewed, up to 60% of clients with Panic Disorder have problems with alcohol and substance abuse. It is not uncommon to find clients who present to South Pacific Private with alcohol or substance misuse and co-occurrence of an Anxiety Disorder. The association is complex and it is not always easy to determine which is the primary problem - the chicken or the egg?

Clients with alcohol and substance abuse may experience anxiety symptoms as a result of the abuse, and these symptoms may improve with abstinence. On the other hand, if they have a primary Anxiety Disorder, and it is not addressed, the risk of relapse is high. Careful evaluation and proper intervention is critical with clients who have both of these conditions.

Dr Teoh will be addressing these and other issues that arise when working with patients who present with co-existing Anxiety disorders and Alcohol/Substance abuse. This workshop will focus on assessment and management of patients and will include a presentation, discussion and case studies.
