Why Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic Psychotherapy, recognised in psychological, neurological, developmental, medical, social and cultural sciences, operates on the belief that emotions, thoughts and physical experiences are interfunctioning. In other words, a person’s psyche and soma (Greek for living body) constitute one entity called the body mind. While engaging with their clients on a verbal level, somatic psychotherapists also work with their clients’ dynamic bodily experience by recognising non-verbal signals and sounds, and using appropriate therapeutic touch (with permission). This approach aids the development of self awareness and can deepen the connection to oneself and others. The resulting benefits can include improved body sensing, stress relief, a balanced nervous system, and a sense of vitality.

Workshop Outline

The aim of this workshop is to give participants a direct experience of some of the techniques used in Somatic Psychotherapy.

We will begin with a brief overview and explanation of the basic methodology. This will be followed by demonstrations of some basic techniques and the opportunity to participate in the practical application of these techniques. Debrief in small groups will take place after each demonstration. All participation is voluntary and participants are free to choose to observe rather than participate.

Techniques will include:

Mutuality – being present to and aware of self and other simultaneously, whilst tracking energetic physical and emotional reactions. (Countertransference)

Experiencing a deeper connection within the self
Helping the patient to connect more deeply with the emotion of an experience directly within the body, thereby facilitating contact with the story-teller rather staying on the surface of the story.

Direct physical experience of Boundaries

Creating and maintaining an actual physical boundary for the self, tracking the internal sensatory countertransference and gaining a direct felt experience of maintaining and holding one’s boundaries.

Packing Massage/Tracking the transference
Comparison of the physical connection with self before and after a brief session of matter-of-fact touch.

Feedback/Question time
