Treating relationship issues

| Print |
South Pacific Private offers a combination of medical, therapeutic and skills-based support for those wanting to understand and improve their relationships. We can help you gain a better, more objective perspective and build a better sense of self, to put an end to the habits that have been complicating your life.

The South Pacific Private approach

  • We recognise that relationship problems often aren't the only issue. Our roles in our families can stem from, or be a cause of, secondary problems such as depression or substance abuse. Overcoming these interlinked issues requires a wider strategy than one that focuses purely on relationships
  • We treat the whole person, not just one isolated problem. Taking into account the wider circumstances of a person's life – their life at home, at work, their pattern of past relationships, their family, their medical history, any past traumatic experiences – is the best way to uncover and deal with the factors that cause their difficulties with relationships
  • Treatment options should fit where possible with everyday routines. Some clients prefer longer-term stays, but many appreciate the convenience of our day or evening programs
  • Families are part of the treatment process too. Each of our programs have a component that involves a client's family, to include them in the work of therapy and help their awareness of their own family culture

A high rate of success

Compared to other treatment centres, South Pacific Private's programs have a significantly higher chance of breaking the cycle of bad relationships.

The benefits of our programs

Each of our programs will help you learn how to:
  • explore your relational problems and understand why you feel the way you do
  • identify the hurtful personal behaviours and beliefs that are sabotaging your life
  • recognise your thought processes and the dynamics of your family
  • improve communication skills and the quality of your relationships
  • be more assertive, and address feelings of shame and low self-worth
  • practice mindfulness: become self-aware of your thoughts, feelings and physical wellbeing
  • manage times of increased anxiety or distress, and restore your confidence and positivity
  • be better at managing your own thoughts, by learning how to use "counterstatements" to combat distortions in your thinking and change unhelpful personal beliefs

Common elements across all of South Pacific Private's programs

  • Each program is useful for treating people with singular or coexisting issues (for example, relationship issues combined with alcohol dependency or drug addiction), or whose relationship problems can be traced to underlying traumas such as childhood abuse or destructive relationships, past or current
  • We use effective techniques such as group therapy and psycho-education – education about personal development skills delivered through lectures and workshops
  • A multidisciplinary team of professional staff – doctors, nurses and therapist – will regularly review your progress
  • Weekly, your progress will be assessed by a psychiatrist
  • Programs can be covered by private health insurance – either in full or partially, depending on your level of cover
  • Family involvement is encouraged, and sensitively facilitated
  • Our treatment centre is situated in Sydney's Northern Beaches, allowing all programs to be conducted in a natural, healing environment

Our program options for treating relationship issues

  • Evening Program. One evening per week for 8 weeks plus one Saturday, for minimal disruption to your usual daily routine. It's particularly beneficial for people whose relationship issues are having a less severe impact on their everyday life
  • Changes program. 5 days, Monday to Friday. (This program is part of our Inpatient program above.) Understand how issues and events from your childhood can affect your adult life, and how recognising your own patterns of behaviour and choices is an important step towards bringing about change
  • Day Program. 10 to 20 days from 9am to 4pm.* Minimal disruption to your daily routine at home, as you're free to return home at the end of each day. It's another particularly beneficial option for people whose relationship issues are less severe. * The number of days will be based on your unique needs, following a professional assessment
  • Inpatient program. Generally 1 – 5 weeks of 24 hour professional inpatient care. The exact length of your stay will be tailored to your needs by the team responsible for your care, and will include full medical support if required. You'll be involved in the 'therapeutic community' of fellow inpatients, providing peer support and nurturing your self-confidence and awareness. When you leave, a comprehensive after-care plan will help you work on your relationships and discuss real-life situations following your treatment

Key things to remember

  • Improving the quality of our relationships is more likely to work when treatment takes into account the whole person – our emotional and physical wellbeing as well as the wider circumstances of our life, families and routines
  • Therapy is valuable in helping individuals recognise symptoms early, and giving them a better, more robust outlook for dealing with them.
  • This holistic approach is at the heart of all South Pacific Private programs, which range from shorter term to longer term to help people who experience difficulties at different degrees of severity
