Drug and Substance Abuse

Drug and Substance Addiction

At South Pacific Private, we recognise drug addiction as a particularly devastating and all-consuming disease which can destroy lives, fracture families and risk serious health impacts, including overdose.

Understanding drug and substance Addiction

At South Pacific Private, we understand the darkness, pain and devastation drug addiction and relapse can bring, and we’re committed to helping end the cycle long-term. Drug addiction can swiftly escalate both the frequency and intensity as our bodies develop neurological, psychological and physical dependence.

As an accredited private hospital we offer onsite, medically-supervised withdrawal and detoxification options. Our recovery program is based on the proven 12-step principles and includes a fully supported transition phase toward ongoing, long-term recovery support.

Our program also places a special focus on supporting and educating partners, family and friends with our dedicated Family Program.

Recognising drug addiction

Drug addiction does not discriminate, it occurs across all backgrounds, ethnicities and genders. The range of drugs involved also varies widely, from marijuana to methamphetamine (ice), cocaine, codeine, benzodiazepines, GHB, ketamine, fentanyl, ecstasy, Molly and others. Symptoms include:

  • Experiencing cravings to use substances
  • Wanting to cut down, but not being able to
  • Behaviours demonstrating tolerance, such as increasing the dosage to achieve previous levels of effect, or seeking to try new, harder drugs
  • Neglecting other areas of your life in favour of using drugs
  • Continuing to use drugs despite risks of damage to relationships or work
  • Continuing to use, even though it puts you in danger

A significant portion of drug users also suffer from mental health issues including depression, anxiety, trauma and bipolar disorder. Effectively identifying and treating such instances of dual diagnosis is critical for long-term recovery.

The goal of our self-tests is not to provide you with a diagnosis for yourself or for someone you care about. Instead, they are an opportunity for you to better understand how a behaviour might be impacting upon your life or the life of your family. Use these tests to enhance your awareness of what the problem might be.

These tests should be answered honestly in order to provide accurate insight and are a chance for you to reflect upon the current situation.
