Trauma Therapy In Sydney

We know trauma can bring feelings of shame, confusion or fear, making it hard to reach out. That’s why we create a safe environment where your story is received with compassion, never judgment.

Trauma therapy offers structured treatment to help individuals process and heal from distressing experiences that have had lasting psychological effects.

You might know a loved one struggling with past trauma, or it might even be you. Programs like PTSD treatment therapy aren’t about erasing memories. Instead, they focus on adopting new ways to engage with them and managing their impact on your emotional state and daily functions, giving you breathing room where anxiety once prevailed.

We help you regain control of your life with evidence-based trauma support services in Sydney.

We’ve spent three decades refining our approach to provide a supportive, respectful environment, welcoming over 14,000 individuals and families into recovery. Here, you can experience our pioneering methods that emphasise holistic healing, addressing physical, emotional and psychological aspects collaboratively.

Trauma Therapy with Care and Compassion

We know trauma can bring feelings of shame, confusion or fear, making it hard to reach out. That’s why we create a safe environment where your story is received with compassion, never judgment.

Our post-traumatic stress disorder treatment goes beyond talking through memories, combining evidence-based frameworks and tailored strategies that gently explore how trauma has shaped your life and relationships, and always at a pace that feels safe.

It’s a delicate balance between guiding your healing journey and respecting your boundaries. Our goal is to nurture a stable environment rooted in trauma-informed care and clinical safety. You can push into your experiences gently, knowing you’re supported by experts who respect your limits.

Treatment includes group therapy, educational sessions and our Changes Program.

  • Our trauma group therapy sessions give you the chance to connect, share and learn from others who walk a similar path.
  • Educational sessions provide valuable insights and coping mechanisms that reinforce healing outside therapy hours.
  • The optional Changes Program allows for focused trauma recovery, particularly if your trauma involves developmental aspects, allowing deeper exploration and healing.

Which models do we use and why?

Our trauma therapy integrates two evidence-informed approaches: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Pia Mellody’s Model of Developmental Immaturity.

The Model of Developmental Immaturity examines how early childhood experiences can shape relational patterns and emotional responses in adulthood — including co-dependency, addiction, and difficulties with self-worth. This approach forms the foundation of our Changes Program, a dedicated five-day program within the inpatient stay, and is designed to support clients in understanding and beginning to address developmental trauma.

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy used to support the processing of traumatic memories. Rather than requiring clients to revisit trauma in detail, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain access and reprocess distressing memories in a more contained way. Research supports its use for trauma and PTSD.

EMDR is available as a one-to-one therapy option for current inpatient clients. Suitability and scheduling are determined by the multidisciplinary team as part of each client’s individual treatment plan. Sessions are limited in availability during inpatient admission. Clients who are recommended for EMDR and do not complete a full course during their stay may be supported to continue with an external EMDR practitioner following discharge.

To find out whether EMDR may be part of your treatment plan, speak with our intake team or raise it with your primary therapist on admission.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

No, you will not have to re-experience your trauma during trauma therapy. At South Pacific Private, therapy focuses on safety and emotional readiness. Techniques like EMDR and Pia Mellody’s developmental model help you process trauma without reliving it. Therapy builds trust, keeps you grounded and protects you from becoming overwhelmed.

The duration of emotional trauma therapy varies by individual. Our standard inpatient program runs for three weeks in a structured, 24/7 therapeutic environment. Continued healing can include the Transitions Program, day programs, or outpatient therapy, depending on your trauma severity, co-occurring conditions and recovery progress.

Therapists at South Pacific Private choose trauma therapy methods by evaluating your psychological symptoms, emotional safety, physical health and recovery goals. They create a personalised treatment plan that blends approaches like group psychotherapy to support your healing. This process is collaborative and centred on your unique story.

Take A Self-Assessment

The goal of our self-tests is not to provide you with a diagnosis for yourself or for someone you care about. Instead, they are an opportunity for you to better understand how a behaviour might be impacting upon your life or the life of your family. Use these tests to enhance your awareness of what the problem might be.

These tests should be answered honestly in order to provide accurate insight and are a chance for you to reflect upon the current situation.
